Whereas iodine deficiency will lead to goitre formation and rarely hypothyroidism, iodine excess can temporarily inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis (WolffΓÇôChaikoff effect) or induce thyrotoxicosis JodΓÇôBasedow phenomenon). Chronic iodine excess can also cause goitre formation and hypothyroidism.
